What is the Live Experience?

The Live Experience begins when Grain starts recording your meeting.

At this point, the Grain Notepad automatically opens in the desktop app, giving you a real-time view of your conversation while itโ€™s happening.

From the Notepad, you can follow the live transcript, write private notes, highlight key moments, create clips, and manage sharing settings during the meeting.

Everything captured during the Live Experience will appear on the meeting page once the meeting ends.

What you can do during the Live Experience

During the meeting, the Notepad allows you to:

  • Follow the live transcript as the conversation happens

  • Highlight key moments by creating clips

  • Write private notes and action items

  • Assign the meeting to a team or adjust sharing settings

  • Stop recording if needed without ending the meeting

View and interact with the live transcript

During the Live Experience, Grain generates a real-time transcript of the meeting in the Notepad.

The transcript updates continuously as participants speak and includes speaker labels so you can easily follow the conversation.

From the transcript, you can:

  • Create clips from important moments

  • Add comments

  • Scroll back to review earlier parts of the meeting

If you scroll away from the live portion of the transcript, click Return to Current Position to jump back to the latest part of the conversation.

Create clips during a meeting

You can capture important moments in the conversation by creating clips. Clips can be created in two ways:

  1. Private Notes tab: Click 'Create clip' at the bottom of the page to capture a moment from the meeting.

  2. Transcript tab: Highlight a section of the transcript and click 'Clip'

Grain will automatically generate a title for the clip, but you can edit it if you'd like to use a custom title.

Once created, you can:

  • Copy the clip link to share it

  • Add the clip to a Story

  • Send it to Slack

  • Delete the clip and a create new one if needed

Write private notes during the meeting

The Notepad includes a Private Notes tab where you can write notes and action items while the meeting is happening.

Your notes are:

  • Visible only to you

  • Saved automatically

  • Synced with the transcript

After the meeting ends, your notes will appear on the meeting page alongside the recording and transcript.

If you click a timestamped clip inside your notes, it will jump directly to that point in the transcript and video.

Assign the meeting to a team during the call

You can assign the meeting to a team while the meeting is still being recorded.

From the Notepad, adjust the sharing settings to select which team should have access to the meeting. This helps ensure the right people can find the recording later.

You can also update team access and sharing settings from the meeting page after the meeting ends.

Formatting notes with slash commands

You can quickly format your notes using slash commands. Typing / in the Private Notes editor will open formatting options such as:

  • Heading

  • Sub heading

  • Paragraph

  • Bullet list

  • Ordered list

  • Task list

This makes it easier to structure your notes and organize action items during the meeting.

Closing or reopening the Notepad

If you accidentally close the Notepad during a meeting, you can reopen it at any time.

To reopen the Notepad:

  • Click the Grain icon in your menu bar โ†’ Open Grain

The Notepad will reopen so you can continue following the meeting and taking notes.

Navigating away from the Notepad

The Notepad behaves differently depending on whether the meeting is still being recorded.

If the meeting is still being captured: Returning to the meeting will reopen the Notepad so you can continue following the live transcript and taking notes.

If the meeting has ended: Grain will open the full meeting page, where you can review the recording, transcript, clips, and summary.

Everything captured during the Live Experience will appear on the meeting page once the meeting ends.
