Ask Grain AI

Ask questions in natural language about any meeting and get an AI-generated answer.

Ask Grain AI lets you query meeting content without reading the full transcript. Ask for a summary, extract action items, check whether a topic came up, or pull out specific details. Grain's AI reads the meeting and responds directly.

Where to find it

The Ask anything bar is located in the bottom right corner on both the ‘Meetings’ page and on all meeting recording pages. Questions asked within a meeting recording are scoped to that specific meeting.

Example questions

  • "What were the three main topics discussed in this call?"

  • "Did the client mention a timeline or deadline?"

  • "List all action items and who they were assigned to."

  • "Was pricing discussed? If so, what was said?"

  • "Summarize the customer's main concerns in two sentences."

  • "What objections came up and how were they handled?"

Tips for better results

  • Keep it simple and precise: state exactly what you want Grain to do with the meeting content.

    • Bad example: "What was discussed in the meeting?"

    • Good example: "Please provide a concise summary of the key points discussed in the meeting."

  • Request specific responses: if you need a yes or no answer, say so upfront.

    • Bad example: "Tell me about the pricing."

    • Good example: "Please respond with Yes or No. Was a pricing discount part of this conversation?"

  • Use plain language: avoid jargon so the AI can interpret your prompt accurately.

    • Bad example: "Please elucidate the deliverables."

    • Good example: "Can you explain what needs to be delivered?"

  • Mention key features: name the specific elements you want the AI to focus on.

    • Bad example: "Tell me what's important."

    • Good example: "Please identify any CRM items discussed during the meeting."

  • Specify the response format: if you want bullet points, a table, or a one-sentence answer, say so.

    • Bad example: "Give me the results."

    • Good example: "Please provide a summary in bullet point format."

  • Focus on what you want: frame prompts around what you do want, not what you don't.

    • Bad example: "Please summarize the call. Don't write more than 3 sentences."

    • Good example: "Please summarize the call in 3 sentences or less."

  • Start with an action verb: lead with a clear instruction so the AI knows exactly what to do.

    • Bad example: "Discuss the project progress."

    • Good example: "Summarize the project progress."

  • Use keywords and synonyms: including related terms helps capture a wider range of relevant content.

    • Bad example: "Tell me about customer satisfaction."

    • Good example: "Provide insights on customer satisfaction, including client happiness and user contentment."

  • Use conditional statements: handle multiple scenarios in one prompt when you expect varied outcomes.

    • Bad example: "Summarize the budget meeting."

    • Good example: "If the client mentioned budget constraints, provide suggestions for cost optimization. If not, summarize the key points discussed."

  • Provide context: briefly explain the background behind your request when it affects the answer.

    • Bad example: "Summarize customer feedback."

    • Good example: "Given the recent product launch, summarize customer feedback on the new features discussed in this meeting."

  • Iterate and refine: if a prompt does not return what you need, adjust it and try again. Small changes in phrasing often make a significant difference.

    • Bad example: "Summarize the project progress."

    • Good example: "If "Summarize the project progress" isn't yielding the insights you need, you can refine it to say, "Summarize the key achievements and challenges in the project progress report."
