Live meeting experience

Follow your transcript, take notes, and clip key moments while a meeting is in progress.

When Grain starts recording, the Grain Notepad opens automatically in the desktop app. This is the live meeting experience, a real-time view of your conversation as it happens.

Everything captured during a live meeting including clips, private notes, and the transcript, appears on the recording page once the meeting ends.

Live transcript

The ‘Transcript’ tab in the Notepad shows a real-time transcript of the meeting as participants speak, with speaker labels throughout.

From the live transcript you can:

  • Scroll back to review earlier parts of the conversation

  • Create clips by highlighting any section and clicking ’Clip’

  • Add inline comments to transcript moments by highlighting any section and clicking ‘Comment’

If you scroll back to review earlier content, click ’Return to Current Position’ to jump back to the latest part of the transcript.

Note: Live transcription on Desktop capture is available in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and Italian. Other supported languages are transcribed after the meeting ends.

Private notes

The ‘Private notes’ tab is a personal scratchpad that runs alongside the transcript. Notes are visible only to you and save automatically.

Type / in the ‘Private notes’ editor to open formatting options:

  • Heading

  • Sub heading

  • Paragraph

  • Bullet list

  • Ordered list

  • Task list

You can create clips from the ‘Private notes’ tab for the current point in the meeting by selecting ‘+ New clip’ at the bottom. Once created, you can copy the clip link, add it to a Story, or send it to Slack.

After the meeting ends, your notes will appear on the meeting page alongside the recording and transcript.

If you click a timestamped clip inside your notes, it will jump directly to that point in the transcript and video.

Team assignment

You can assign the meeting to a team during the call from the Notepad, so the right people have access to the recording before it ends. Team assignment and sharing settings can also be updated from the recording page after the meeting. See My Meetings for how auto-share rules work.

Stop recording

You can stop recording from the Notepad without ending the meeting. The participants remain in the call; Grain simply stops capturing.

Closing and reopening the Notepad

If you close the Notepad during a meeting, reopen it by clicking the confirmation “Capturing” text in the Green banner at the top of your window.

The Notepad opens automatically when a new recording starts. To control this behavior, see the ’Open notepad when Grain starts recording’ toggle in App settings.

Navigating away from the Notepad

The Notepad behaves differently depending on whether the meeting is still being recorded.

If the meeting is still being captured: returning to the meeting will reopen the Notepad so you can continue following the live transcript and taking notes.

If the meeting has ended: Grain will open the full meeting page, where you can review the recording, transcript, clips, and summary.

Everything captured during the live experience will appear on the meeting page once the meeting ends.
