Grain Desktop App

Learn what the window and menu bar controls do in the Grain desktop app.

The Grain desktop app is designed to run in the background so it's ready when your next meeting starts. Because of this, closing the app window isn't the same as closing the app itself. Here's what each option in the Grain menu does.

Where to find these options

Click the Grain icon in the menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows) to open the dropdown menu.

Hide Grain

This option is available on Mac only. It hides the Grain window from view without closing the app. Grain keeps running in the background, and the icon stays in your menu bar.

Note: If 'Hide Grain' doesn't fully hide the window on Mac, try quitting and reopening the app. If it persists, contact Grain support with your log files (Help → Send Log Files).

Quit

Closes the Grain window, but Grain keeps running in the background so it can still detect and capture meetings. The icon remains in your menu bar or system tray.

Quit Completely

Fully exits the app. This is the option to use if you want to:

  • Remove the Grain icon from your menu bar or system tray

  • Install an app update

  • Troubleshoot an issue that requires a fresh restart of the app

Updating the Desktop App

When an update is ready, Grain shows an 'Updates available' banner. Select 'Install' to immediately restart and update the Grain desktop app. Selecting 'Install on next launch' only installs the update the next time Grain fully restarts, so you'll need to use 'Quit Completely' (not 'Quit') for the update to take effect.

If you want to manually search for updates, select ‘Check for updates’ from the dropdown menu and follow the install prompts if an update is found.
